Cardiac Test

Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG)

An electrocardiogram is a quick, painless test that records your heart's electrical activity. It shows how fast your heart is beating, whether the rhythm is steady or irregular, and the strength and timing of electrical signals passing through your heart.

Also known as: EKG, ECG, 12-lead ECG, Heart tracing

Who Should Take This Test?

How It Works

Small electrodes (sensors) are placed on your chest, arms, and legs. They are connected by wires to an ECG machine. The machine records your heart's electrical signals as wavy lines that your doctor can read.

Preparation

No special preparation needed. You may be asked to remove clothing from your upper body and avoid lotions on your skin. The body hair may need to be shaved where electrodes are placed.
