Vitamin D (25-Hydroxy)

A vitamin D test measures the levels of vitamin D in your blood. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium to build healthy bones and teeth. It also helps keep your muscles, nerves, and immune system working normally. Deficiency can lead to bone disorders.

Who Should Take This Test?

Used to check vitamin D levels when a bone or health condition may be caused by low vitamin D. Also ordered when you have risk factors for deficiency.

How It Works

A blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm. Before your body can use vitamin D, your liver changes it to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, which is what the test measures.

Preparation

No special preparation needed. Tell your provider about all medicines, vitamins, and supplements you take as they may affect results.

When deficiency is suspected or as part of bone health assessment

Risk Factors

Rarely expose skin to sunlight

Don't eat enough food or have malnutrition

Have had weight loss surgery

Take medicines that affect vitamin D levels (statins, steroids)
