Blood Test

Kidney Function Test (KFT)

A kidney function test measures creatinine and other waste products in your blood and/or urine. Creatinine is a normal waste product made by muscles. Your kidneys filter creatinine from blood and remove it in urine. Abnormal levels may indicate kidney disease.

Also known as: Blood creatinine, Serum creatinine, Renal function test, RFT, BUN

Normal Range

ParameterReference Range
Creatinine (Men)0.7–1.3 mg/dL
Creatinine (Women)0.6–1.1 mg/dL
BUN7–20 mg/dL
eGFR (Normal)90–120 mL/min

Who Should Take This Test?

Used to check kidney health, diagnose kidney disease, monitor known kidney problems, and check for side effects from medicines that may affect kidneys.

How It Works

A blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm. Results are used to calculate eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate), which shows how well your kidneys are filtering waste.

Preparation

You may be told not to eat meat for 24 hours before the test as it can temporarily increase creatinine. If measured as part of a CMP or BMP, you may need to fast for up to 12 hours.

How Often?

Annually for those with risk factors; more frequently if kidney disease is diagnosed
